Two people who are incarcerated in Michigan following the 2020 uprising have birthdays this month!
Our collective has had a busy year so far, posting bail 70 times to get people free in eight counties around the state.
We stand in solidarity with those who demand justice in the wake of the murder of Patrick Lyoya by the Grand Rapids Police Department. Links can be found in our bio for a letter with demands from Together We Are Safe and members of Patrick's family, as well as a fundraiser for funeral expenses. @thevoicesoftherevolution has organized a march today, April 9th, at 3pm, and a second march to the city commission meeting is planned for Tuesday at 5:30. While we hope there are no arrests in the coming days, we have funds available to help with bail. Anyone with information on an arrest can call @nlg_detroit's protest support hotline at 313-925-2626.
We hit a new milestone this month: since we began regularly posting bail in the spring of 2020, we have now bailed out over 100 people across nearly ten Michigan counties.
On September 3rd the GRPD violently arrested Isaiah, a young Black man, for allegedly “fitting a description” from a burglary in progress even though he was at work and his coworkers told police that he had been there for hours. Isaiah is currently facing multiple charges related to his traumatic arrest. We were glad to be able to post the bond and get Isaiah out the following day, but he and his family need more support with fees for a lawyer and other expenses. Please join us if you can in supporting Isaiah so he can fight these charges and move on with his life! Fundraiser link in our bio.
In the spirit of abolition and solidarity, we have endorsed @jailhouse_lawyers_speak's national call for Shut 'Em Down demonstrations outside prisons, jails, and ICE detention centers on August 21st and September 9th, 2021. In the days leading up to the demos, JLS will be posting more information and planned locations on their website, linked in our bio. If you'll be organizing a demo or your organization wants to be listed as an endorser, you can email them at outthemud.jls@protonmail.com.
